Whilst much looked forward to, it was not one of our best Octobers, with westerlies dominating the month. Two Velvet Scoter were in the bay on 1st October. A Yellow-browed Warbler on 7th at Gristhorpe Bay was the first for the year. A probable Eastern Subalpine Warbler mistnetted on 10th at the Tip would be our first proper record. Two old records don’t have enough detail to be more specific. A Yellow-browed Warbler was in Arndale the same day. A Great White Egret on 11th at Filey Dams remained for the rest of the month. Short-eared Owl and Jack Snipe were at the Tip on 18th. A juvenile Rose-coloured Starling between 19th – 21st in the town was a welcome twitch for the locals. The autumn’s first Snow Bunting was on Carr Naze on 22nd. 2192 Siskin poured south on 23rd at Hunmanby Gap, a new day-record. An Iceland Gull was seen the same day. A White-billed Diver was reported on 25th from the Brigg, and later seen at Flamborough. 39 Rock Pipits on migration at Hunmanby Gap the same day was a new day-record for FBOG.
