May was busy and ended with a very unexpected First for Filey. On 1st a Sedge Warbler was at the Tip. 2 Whimbrel were flushed from Brigg end, a rare spring adult Pomarine Skua went north on seawatch, a Little Egret was at Filey Dams with a pair of Pintail, two Common Sandpiper and three Black-tailed Godwits. Four Great Northern Divers were still in the bay this evening with 6 Sandwich Terns and 77 Common Gulls on 2nd. A late Whooper Swan flew south at Hunmanby Gap on 3rd. A decent variety of migrants moved through Hunmanby Gap. Highlights 1 Whooper Swan and 7 Mute Swan south, 1 Whimbrel and Common Sandpiper north, 61 Sand Martin, 131 Swallow, 9 Yellow Wagtail, 187 Linnet, 158 Goldfinch plus 3 Lesser Whitethroat, 3 Blackcap 4 Whitethroat and a Willow Warbler singing. On 4th 2 Grey Partridge were flushed from Carr Naze side steps. 15+ Bottlenose Dolphins headed south towards the Brigg. A Garden Warbler was on the east side of Parish Wood on 5th, with a Marsh Harrier east over Dams, Little Ringed Plover at the Dams, a Wood Sandpiper was at East Lea, also three Common Sandpiper. A drake Garganey was at the Dams on 6th, with a Great White Egret overhead spooked by a gunshot. A drake Goosander also appeared at the Dams. A Spoonbill came in off the sea over Rocket Pole field.On 8th a Hobby was seen from the Car Park hide at the Dams. On 9th a Marsh Harrier immature male flew north at Hunmanby Gap plus two Great Northern Diver and two Red throated Diver inshore. A Hummingbird Hawk Moth was in a garden in Wooldale Drive. Another cream-crown Marsh Harrier came in off and south at Hunmanby Gap on 10th plus 4 Shelduck south. A Whinchat was in the Rocket Pole field. A Hobby flew north over West Avenue/Glen Gardens. On 12th a drake Garganey was in the bay off Arndale, A summer plumage Grey Plover was on the Brigg on 13th. A male Siskin was feeding with a finch flock on Country Park on 14th. A Cuckoo called west of the Dams on 15th. An Osprey went north along North Cliff at 16.20 on 16th. On 17th a female Goosander was at the Dams. A Quail was calling & seen briefly along Short Hedge on 19th, with a Hobby briefly over Carr Naze car park chasing Sand Martins. Yet another Marsh Harrier went northwest at Hunmanby Gap on 21st. On 22nd an evening Bluethroat was photographed but vanished overnight. At Primrose Valley Lake a regular Oystercatcher pair was with 3 well grown young. Two Avocets settled into the Dams on 26th, and Dam observers were amazed when a Squacco Heron suddenly popped into view! This First for Filey stayed until the evening before going on a tour of Yorkshire. Great White Egret and Little Egret could also be seen the same day. On 27th a Red Kite toured Filey. A Marsh Warbler singing near East Lea hide on 27th was a great find. Three Greenshank flew over East Lea. On 28th yet another Filey rarity a Nightjar flew over Reighton Sands car park.
