On 1st 4 Yellowhammer, single Corn Bunting and 20 Reed Bunting were in the hedge north of the football club up to North Cliff. 74 Dunlin were on the Brigg end. Twenty mobile Snow Buntings were on stubble field at North Cliff. On 2nd 30 flighty Snow Bunting, plus Twite, and around 55 Skylark on North Cliff stubble field. A local rarity, two Shore Lark, were in Top Fields. On 3rd a good count of 180 Yellowhammers in a setaside field adjacent to the car park at Hunmanby Gap, plus 18 Skylark, 5 Meadow Pipit, 10 Reed Bunting and a Barnacle Goose on car park. 11 Twite flew north at Hunmanby Gap. A Long-tailed Duck began a month’s residence at Filey Dams; also a single Jack Snipe was flushed from a puddle flew towards Tip. On 12th an unusual winter Jay was in Long Lane. A Black Redstart was on Carr Naze. A Water Rail in a garden (Pasture Crescent) had been around for a week. Fifteen Waxwings were in the top end of Church Ravine. On 16th five Waxwing flew south over Wooldale Drive. 66 Sanderling were on Hunmanby Gap beach on 17th. The long-staying Cetti’s Warbler was on the side of the boardwalk by East Hide on 23rd. Four Great Northern Divers from Filey seafront and a Little Gull flew south along seafront (2nd winter). In the bay gull roost (most off Muston Sands): 250 Herring, 1200 Common, 2300 Black-headed, 1 Great Black-backed Gull. A male Red-breasted Merganser flew north inshore at Hunmanby Gap on 24th. On Boxing Day 42 Snow Bunting, 3 Lapland Bunting and 130 Skylark were in the Top Stubble field. Very high numbers of Wood Pigeon were still around East Lea (800). On 28th a Dark-bellied Brent Goose went south over the Brigg into the bay. On 30th and 31st a Short-eared Owl and a Barn Owl were at the Tip. 50 Snow Bunting, single Lapland Bunting and 7 Grey Partridge were still present and rounded off the year.
