Seabirds and waders were particularly notable this month. Low water levels at Filey Dams and East Lea pulled in some good waders. On 1st 39 Manx and a Balearic Shearwater, a juvenile Caspian Gull around the fishing boats, a flock of five Little Egrets south, and two Wheatears were seen at Carr Naze. On 2nd 16 Black-tailed Godwits were at East Lea. On 7th a juvenile Yellow-legged Gull was at Hunmanby Gap. A local scarcity Garden Warbler was at the Dams. 0n 9th a 1st cy Caspian Gull was following a boat. Also a juvenile Mediterranean Gull and a Arctic Tern were off the Brigg. 26 Black-tailed Godwits, Wood Sandpiper and 2 Green Sandpipers were at Filey Dams on 11th with 52 Whimbrel south at Hunmanby Gap inshore. On 12th a Great White Egret was briefly in the trees at Filey Dams. On 14th a local rarity Nuthatch was rediscovered at Martins Ravine. Three Crossbills flew over Carr Naze pond on 15th. Sea-watching picked upon 17th, with 104 Manx Shearwater, 2 Sooty Shearwater, 2 juvenile Little Gull all north, Black Tern and 4 Arctic Skua and 2 Skua spp south at Hunmanby Gap, and a Great Shearwater, 302 Manx Shearwater n, Balearic Shearwater, 5 Sooty Shearwaters n, Mediterranean Gull, 16 Arctic Skua s, and 5 Bonxies s at the Brigg. On 18th a Marsh Tit was in a garden at Hunmanby Gap. Another Caspian Gull was seen on 20th at Hunmanby Gap. A Spotted Redshank appeared on 21st. On 22nd evening wader movement from the Brigg included 10 Oystercatcher, 2 Golden Plover, Turnstone, 12 Sanderling, Dunlin, 10 Redshank and Greenshank, plus 3 Common Tern and 8 Sandwich Tern. On the Brigg were Arctic Tern, 27 Oystercatcher, 18 Ringed Plover, Curlew, 10 Turnstone (including one ringed on 23/08 last year), 2 Knot, 7 Dunlin, 3 Redshank, Greenshank and 2 Yellow Wagtail. Also a Yellow-legged Gull and a Sanderling were in the bay corner. A Pectoral Sandpiper turned up on 23rd . On 26th 6 Bottle-nosed Dolphins entertained locals in the bay close in off the seafront (lots of jumps clear of water). At least 95 Commic Terns (all close ones Common), 10 Sandwich Terns, 80 Kittiwakes & 8 Common Scoter were also in the bay. An Arctic Skua circled the Dams several times very low on 27th, possibly flushing the Pectoral Sandpiper which flew off calling not to be seen again. Sea-watching on 29th produced 20 Arctic Skua, 5 juvenile Long-tailed Skua, 7 Bonxies, 38 Manxes 3 Sooty Shearwaters and 5 Red-throated Divers. On 30th a Greenish Warbler was found by visitors on Long Hedge. Lastly an Avocet appeared on 31st at East Lea/Dams and has proved very twitchable (still present at time of writing).
