2nd June 2016

2016-06-02T13:39:11+01:00June 2nd, 2016|

A very quiet few days dominated by strong northerly winds, some heavy precipitation and particularly poor conditions generally. New migrants have been few and far between as a result, with a trickle of northbound waders peaking with 24 Sanderlings on the Brigg on 30th. Non-avian migrants have staged a huge influx however, in the tiny […]

The promising conditions delivered a quality bird today in the shape of a Red-backed Shrike at the Tip this morning (MJP et al.); otherwise it was generally quiet, with four Red-breasted Mergansers south and a Red-throated Diver in the bay.

Promising conditions over the last two days have yet to deliver much in the way of late spring scarcities, but new arrivals have included two Hobbies (one east over the Country Park, one hunting west of the Tip), a Little Egret in off at Carr Naze, a Wheatear at the Tip, 12 Black-tailed Godwits at […]

A great find near the Scarborough Road football pitch this morning concerned a Stone-curlew (NS et al.) – only the third ever Filey record (following the last in May four years ago), the bird was unfortunately disturbed soon after by the ploughing of its chosen field. Otherwise, it’s been quiet in northerly winds and relatively […]

Yesterday’s Spoonbill (which arrived during the late afternoon and stuck out the overnight rains) remained until early this morning before leaving to the south. Otherwise, up to three Common Sandpipers have been recorded at East Lea over recent days, as have a roving flock of five Mute Swans (in addition to the three in situ […]

A Spoonbill is at the Dams this afternoon / evening (TC et al.). More to follow tomorrow.

Another quiet couple of days with few signs of movement locally. After several days missing, the Surf Scoter returned to the south of the Brigg late this afternoon, while two Manx Shearwaters, six Common Scoters and 208 Puffins headed south. The land is very quiet, with a single Wheatear on Carr Naze the only migrant of […]

A quiet couple of days with very little of note migration-wise. At the Dams, a couple each of Yellow Wagtail and Shelduck remain along with six Teal and a Common Sandpiper, while a male White Wagtail was briefly at East Lea. The sea remains very quiet with a trickle of Sandwich Terns and good numbers […]

A generally settled, cool day with a light variable breeze which was headlined by a male Serin, which flew low south over Carr Naze and the Country Park calling several times early this morning (MJP). Plenty of other activity included a pair of Garganey at the Dams (MJP et al.), a Redstart by Carr Naze […]

The restrictively strong cold northerly wind persists, with today’s highlights involving northbound fly-bys: 45 Arctic Terns and three Manxies passed the Gap, a cream-crown Marsh Harrier headed over the Top Fields, and a single Manxie passed the Brigg this morning. Assorted other reports included a Great Northern Diver south, Whinchats at the Rocket Pole Field […]
