July and the Gannets

Memorable for the huge flocks of Gannets, Kittiwakes and auks in Filey Bay at the end of the month, engaged in a feeding frenzy and accompanied by Minke Whales further offshore. On 1st there was a Brent Goose in the Country Park and five Whooper Swans at Filey Dams briefly. 6 Great Northern Divers, 7 Red-throated Divers, 15 Great Crested Grebes, and 3 Wigeon were off the seafront. A quiet month, with most of the action on the sea. The year started with the usual suspects: Great Northern Divers in the bay plus 36 Wigeon, 2 Teal, and one Great Crested Grebe. Two Great Northern Diver went north offshore at Hunmanby Gap on 1st. A large Pipit at Carr Naze flew towards Rocket Pole field calling like a Richard’s Pipit.
