A quiet month, with most of the action on the sea.
The year started with the usual suspects: Great Northern Divers in the bay plus 36 Wigeon, 2 Teal, and one Great Crested Grebe. There were 1150 Herring Gulls, 300 Black-headed Gulls and 50 Common Gull in the dusk roost off Hunmanby Gap. Five Woodcock were in the weedy field next to the car park the same evening. On 2nd a Water Rail was at Filey Dams and many Guillemots were off Carr Naze including some on the cliffs. The Brigg had a good assortment of waders including 7 Grey Plover, 12 Oystercatcher, 15 Dunlin, 8 Ringed Plover, 5 Purple Sandpiper, 3 Redshank, 1 Lapwing and 3 Turnstone. Bottle-nosed Dolphins were seen on 5th, 6th, 21st, 23rd and 30th. Nine hundred Fulmar went north on 5th. The Cetti’s Warbler was singing by East Lea path reedbed on 6th. 100 Oystercatcher were also on the Brigg at high tide. A Snow Bunting flew in-off over Brigg on 8th. 440 Pink-footed Goose flew over on 9th. A Red Kite flew north on 14th. On 17th 4 Brent Geese flew south over the bay. A Little Auk was at Brigg end on 21st, with a very grey Song Thrush in Church Ravine. On 25th there was a big Gannet arrival with flock of 180 on sea between Hunmanby Gap and Speeton Cliffs.
