On 1st a Willow Warbler was singing on Long Lane. Two Purple Sandpipers, an Arctic Skua and an immature Caspian Gull on the Brigg. A sea-watch produced Red-necked Grebe 1N; Arctic Skua 12S; Bonxie 2S; Red-breasted Merganser 1N; Common Scoter 27S; Wigeon 6S, 1N; Manx Shearwater 30S. A female/juv Redstart and Wheatear were on Carr Naze. 300+ Goldfinch were at The Bay, Hunmanby Gap. Six Wheatear were on Carr Naze on 2nd, with Pied Flycatcher, Redstart, Lesser Whitethroat, and Golden Plover and three Whinchats in the Rocket Post Field. A Hobby flew south at Hunmanby Gap. A Red-legged Partridge was flushed off North Cliff at the top of Long Lane. East Lea held many waders during the month, including Green Sandpiper, Greenshank, Redshank, Lapwing, Ruff, Snipe, Black-tailed Godwit, Ringed Plover, Common Sandpiper and Dunlin. An evening sea-watch had 40 Manx Shearwater, 1 Sooty Shearwater, 15 Arctic Skuas, 500 + Common Terns, 5 Arctic Terns 1 Black Tern, 1 adult Little Gull, and two Little Egrets. On 3rd 10 Whimbrel went over The Tip heading south. A Kingfisher was at Carr Naze pond catching small fish on 4th A Cory’s Shearwater drifted north mid-shore at Hunmanby Gap landing on sea and feeding now and again. On 6th there was a high count of 170 Lapwing at East Lea early morning. A Marsh Harrier flew north over CarrNaze/Top Scrub on 7th. A Curlew Sandpiper and Little Stint were at East Lea. A Wood Warbler was in Long Lane. Six Redstart, 2 Pied Flycatcher, 1 Garden Warbler, 2 Lesser Whitethroat, 2 Whitethroat, 8 Chiffchaff and two Willow Warbler were also present. Two Curlew Sandpipers were at East Hide on 8th. 10 Chiffchaffs, 8 Lesser Whitethroat, Reed Warbler, 3 Redstart, Spotted Flycatcher, Whinchat, Wheatear, and Yellow Wagtails were seen. A cream-crowned Marsh Harrier flew west over Tip and seen again on 9th. A Cory’s Shearwater flew south off Carr Naze in strong winds. 700 House Martins and 20 Mipits south at the Gap on 10th. A Goosander flew over East Lea. The first Pinkfeet of the autumn flew over Filey Dams on 11th. A Great White Egret at Filey Dams was flushed from the new dipping pond. Singles were seen frequently during the month. On 12th male & female Blackcap and a Great Spotted Woodpecker were at East Lea. On 13th 26 Pink-footed Geese flew south at the Gap, and a Marsh Harrier flew north. Five Willow Emerald Damselflies were at Primrose Valley pond. A Great White Egret was at Filey Dams on 14th. An Osprey went north at the Gap over the sea , heading towards bay corner on 15th. Two Great White Egret were at Dams. A Bar-tailed Godwit was in bay corner, and six Pale-bellied Brent Geese (2 adults and 4 juvs.) were on Brigg end. A Cetti’s Warbler was by the boardwalk between Dipping Pond and East Pool hide on 17th. A MEGA STONE CURLEW was found at East Lea on 18th, and seen again on 19th, our fourth record. A juvenile Cuckoo was present here for a week until 19th. The first Yellow-browed Warbler was in Church Ravine on 21st. Several others were found over the next few days. Two Cuckoos flew south over Country Park on 23rd. A Marsh Harrier headed low over bay, approaching Brigg. On 24th a Marsh Tit and small influx of Song Thrushes at Hunmanby Gap plus Blackcap and Chiff-chaff. Three Siskins, a Tree Pipit and Golden Plover were in Country Park. A Red-breasted Flycatcher was in top of Parish Wood. A Black Tern flew over Top Scrub on 26th. On 27th a Red-breasted Merganser was in Bay corner and 2 Pale-bellied Brent Geese flew north. 62 Barnacle Goose flew north at Hunmanby Gap. A Whooper Swan was at Filey Dams on 28th.On 29th gull roost totals were: Herring Gull 5,455; Common Gull 100; Black-headed Gull 360, Lesser Black-backed 1 and Great Black-backed 1. 15 Red-throated Divers, 3 Pintail, and 9 Common Scoter were also present.
